Share it fairly, but don't take a slice of my pie Money, so they say Is the root of all evil today But if you ask for a raise it's no surprise they're giving none away from Money, Pink Floyd Economics shape our lives--there's no argument here, is there? Many of you have jobs, and the finances of you, your families and friends dictate a lot of the decisions in your life. It stands to reason, then, that if a literary work doesn't take economics into account, it's probably misunderstanding the culture within the work and the culture that produced the work. $o Marxist literary theory tends to focus on real life motivations, as well as some truths about human society we may not actively recognize. As you read the chapter, pay special attention to the concepts of class struggle, ideology, consumerism, and commodity. For those of you who read 1984, you might recall the chapter from Goldstein's book--an excellent depiction of class struggle. Gatsby also lends itself exceptionally well to a Marxist reading, as you will discover. |
